Info Team

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology, the research center in cooperation with AUVA (Austrian Workers’ Compensation Board), employs more than 80 scientists from a wide range of disciplines, including chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, medicine, physics, and medical and electrical engineering. This multidisciplinary team enables the institute to cover a broad spectrum of applied research. The institute serves as a resource hub for all AUVA medical facilities and thus acts as an important point of contact for physicians with a scientific interest. In addition to training courses, seminars, and individual consultations, it also offers physicians the opportunity to actively participate in research through the AUVA rotation program. The research facility maintains close collaborations with all AUVA trauma hospitals (located in Vienna, Klagenfurt, Salzburg, and Linz), as well as with the rehabilitation centers Weißer Hof in Klosterneuburg and Tobelbad near Graz. Furthermore, the institute fosters strong partnerships with numerous national and international hospitals, research institutions, and industry partners, ensuring continued international competitiveness. The institute is also involved in the education and training of medical professionals and students (theses and doctoral work), and has supported several colleagues on their path to habilitation. Training is further enhanced through partnerships with institutions such as the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien (Bachelor’s program in Biomedical Engineering and Master’s program in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine), the Biomedical Engineering Master’s program at Technical University Vienna, the Medical University of Vienna’s Dr. med. sci./PhD program “Regeneration of Bone and Joint,” and programs at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.

Our History

The first chapter of the Austrian Workers’ Compensation Board (AUVA) Center for Traumatology Research began in 1973 with the establishment of the AUVA Institute for Traumatology Research by Dr. Wolfgang Krösl, former Medical Director of the AUVA. Professor Dr. Günther Schlag, later appointed head of the Institute, expanded the Research Center in 1980 by founding the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental and Clinical Traumatology. Research pursuits and budget planning are supervised annually by a board of trustees and internationally by the Ludwig Boltzmann Society every fourth year. According to their stated ordinance, the AUVA is obliged to ensure continuous improvement in patient care, thereby supporting research pursuits and remaining a main source of funding to the Research Center. Further financial support is received directly from projects in industry and the European Union. With the integration of the non-profit organisation Trauma Care Consult in 1998, the Research Center was strengthened by its enhanced industrial relations.

In 1998, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Heinz Redl took over as head of the institute, a position he held for 20 years. Under his leadership, the research center developed into an internationally recognized institution where collaboration, interdisciplinarity, and translational research were key priorities. His innovative spirit was honored by the Austrian Tissue Association with the Wilhelm Exner Medal. Since handing over the leadership to Prof. Dr. Johannes Grillari in 2019, Prof. Redl has remained actively involved at the institute as a Senior Postdoc.

The research center is housed within the Lorenz Böhler Trauma Hospital in Vienna. In 2003, an external branch was established in Linz, dedicated to the isolation and research of human adult stem cells. This unit is operated in cooperation with the Blood Center of the Upper Austrian Red Cross.

In 2006, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental and Clinical Traumatology co-founded the Austrian Cluster for Tissue Regeneration and has been coordinated by Dr. Heinz Redl ever since. In 2021, the cooperation agreement with AUVA was renewed, and the institute was renamed to “Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology – The Research Center in Cooperation with AUVA.”

Achievements of the Research Center are not only evidenced by its array of scientific publications (over 1800 since 1980), but also by its organization of several international congresses (i.e. The Vienna Shock Forum, The Wiggers-Bernard Conferences, Shock Societies Conferences, International Fibrin Sealant Conferences and the TERMIS World Congress 2012) and composition of books and book series. The “Günther Schlag Award” is granted to young scientists for oustanding research projects in Trauma Care.
